Combining my practices in painting and fiber, I create gestural, abstract paintings in watercolor accented with sewing. This series is about impulsiveness. It’s about making quick decisions with no regrets. It requires thinking on the subconscious level, remaining free and unhindered in thought. It’s about dialing into the part of me that I can not always connect to in daily life. Creating simple shapes on paper, I immerse my eyes in a feast of color, watching to see how pigments interact with each other and giving them the majority of control. Time is limited and quick decisions are crucial. As each piece dries the process moves to the next step. Pondering the next phase of each piece is a meditative process. Paper is torn, cut or chosen to leave whole. Thread colors are contemplated. Sewing patterns are imagined. As with the start of each piece, loose ideas are formed knowing that embracing the unplanned is part of this process. There is no undoing. There is only forward movement and knowing when to stop is my greatest ally. Listening to the voice between my conscious and subconscious mind, each piece is a practice in patience, trust and spontaneity.
